YOU’VE GOT TIME to kill before your flight, there’s a queue to enter the airline lounge and all you want is a quiet space to make a few work calls without strangers listening in or drowning you out. At many airports, your best option would be to find a relatively uncrowded corner of carpet. But, increasingly, airport co-working spaces and by-the-hour offices provide a less stressful recourse.

PLANNING A TRIP can feel like a game of chance. With luck, you’ll score a decent seat for your chosen destination. But savvy travelers who want a truly desirable seat can sign up for another game: an airline auction, which lets ticket-holders bid for a chance to move on up. If your bid is accepted, you’ll typically get upgraded by at least one class, so if you’re in coach and the flight has premium economy, a seat there will be your prize.
UNIDENTIFIED FLYING OBJECTS A fleet of new or newly expanded airlines are flying from U.S. cities to top travel destinations in Europe and promoting fares for as little as $135 one-way. TOYING WITH THE idea of a European vacation next year but haven’t booked your trip? Experts, forecasting a travel boom across the pond in 2023, say affordable fares could become increasingly scarce. Mike Arnot, a spokesman for aviation analytics firm Cirium, said shoppers could reap savings of around 25% by booking on these under-the-radar carriers. From Iceland, Play offers connecting flights to Paris, Berlin, Prague, Barcelona and other European cities.
IN THE 1963 MOVIE “The VIPs,” a well-heeled group of travelers, portrayed by an all-star cast featuring Richard Burton and a bejeweled Liz Taylor, gets stranded at a fogged-in London Heathrow Airport. But the flick’s real star is the airport lounge where the swells hole up. This was an era when airport lounges were posh simply because they were invitation-only. Today, lounges are ubiquitous, and you don’t need an engraved invitation to get in, just the right kind of ticket, paid membership or credit card. An estimated 3,000 lounges now populate major airports worldwide, according to LoungeReview.com.
